(Accreditation Standards)

EARTH DAY DEVELOPMENT STAR

In alignment with a commitment to continuous improvement, Earth Day Development Star Accreditation Standards are refined annually to remain relevant and impactful. These updates reflect feedback from peer review teams, accreditation committees, university administrators, and other stakeholders in the sustainability and education sectors. The Earth Day Development Star Standards emphasize clarity and guidance for institutions committed to sustainable development, effective immediately following each annual update.

About the Award

The EARTH DAY DEVELOPMENT STAR accreditation system was jointly developed and issued by Earth Day Network and the International Fund for China’s Environment (IFCE). This accreditation aims to guide universities worldwide to leverage their unique strengths and innovative projects, actively fostering global ecological protection and sustainable development.

The mission of EARTH DAY DEVELOPMENT STAR is to assist universities in deeply understanding core standards for sustainability, aligning their education, research, management, and campus operations with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through this accreditation, institutions gain insight into their strengths and areas for growth, fostering collaboration with other international institutions to contribute meaningfully toward a sustainable future.

Rating Medals

To reflect the diverse efforts of institutions in promoting sustainability, Earth Day Development Star provides two types of rating medals:

  • Overall Medal: Indicates the institution’s overall level of sustainable development, awarded in Gold, Silver, and Bronze tiers.
  • Category Medals: Recognize institutions’ achievements in five specific areas: Academic Research, Engagement, Operations, Planning and Management, and Innovation and Leadership. Each category is awarded in Gold, Silver, and Bronze levels, showcasing strengths in specific sustainable fields.

Scoring System

The Earth Day Development Star utilizes a quantitative scoring system to assess specific criteria across each category. Institutions are evaluated and awarded based on predetermined thresholds, with each category having its own maximum and minimum scoring benchmarks. This outcome-focused approach underscores the importance of breadth and quality in sustainability efforts, ensuring institutions are recognized for their measurable impact.

Key Objectives of the Accreditation Standards

The Earth Day Development Star Standards fulfill the following key objectives:

  1. Reinforce Earth Day Development Star’s commitment to mission-focused, peer-reviewed accreditation in sustainability.
  2. Emphasize a principles-based and outcomes-focused approach relevant to the evolving landscape of higher education and sustainable development.
  3. Reflect the diversity and uniqueness of each institution’s contributions toward sustainability, considering their individual missions and contexts.
  4. Align with global sustainability goals, particularly the UN SDGs, to guide institutions in understanding and enhancing their impact on sustainable development.
  5. Ensure continuous improvement by adapting the standards to reflect the latest advancements and best practices in sustainable development across academia.

The accreditation process, built on these standards, offers institutions a comprehensive framework to assess and enhance their sustainability initiatives, reinforcing their role as leaders in ecological and social responsibility on a global scale.
