EARTH DAY DEVELOPMENT STAR is an internationally recognized sustainability accreditation for higher education institutions, designed to evaluate and honor universities worldwide for excellence in academic research, campus engagement, operations, planning and management, and innovation and leadership. This accreditation helps universities align with global environmental goals, offering them the opportunity to improve their sustainability performance.

Background

EARTH DAY DEVELOPMENT STAR originated from the Earth Day movement, which began in 1970, initiated by Harvard University student Dennis Hayes. Since then, it has grown into one of the world’s most impactful environmental movements. This accreditation is jointly issued by the IFCE (International Fund for China’s Environment)and  Earth Day Network to encourage universities globally to engage in sustainable development. It offers a platform for universities to evaluate and showcase their achievements in environmental protection and social responsibility, working alongside esteemed institutions like Harvard and Stanford to advance green education and societal responsibility.

Development of Standards and Processes

The accreditation standards are principles-based and outcome-focused, affirming Earth Day Development Star’s commitment to establishing the highest quality benchmark for sustainability in higher education. These standards encourage institutions to integrate sustainable practices into their core operations, research, and community engagement.

Since its inception, Earth Day Development Star has continuously refined its accreditation standards to stay relevant, adapt to current global sustainability challenges, and maximize value for accredited institutions. A dedicated Standards Committee, in collaboration with universities worldwide, developed the current standards, which were ratified by the Earth Day Development Star Accreditation Council.

The standards emphasize diversity, equity, and inclusion, aligning with sustainable development goals. This allows institutions to demonstrate their impact in these areas in varied, context-specific ways, fostering inclusivity and equity in sustainable development practices.
